Who is the freshman from this season that no one is talking about? I think I know the answer. Doug McDermott of Creighton had a terrific freshman season. So good that he is one of three freshman that lead their team in scoring and rebounding. Continue reading

Meet Donatas Motiejunas

29 Apr

For starters, any highlight video that starts with a wolf walking through the snow covered forest and then transition into a hard-thumping European rap is alright with me. Meet Donatas Motiejunas. The 19-year-old Lithuanian will likely be a top 10 pick in the upcoming June draft. DraftExpress has a great in-depth profile of the tall lefty. He’s a skilled big that can run the floor, shoot the three, handle the ball and score. Aran Smith of NBADraft.net compares him to Andrea Bargnani.

Alabama players safe

27 Apr

A devastating tornado ripped through Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Wednesday. At least 25 people died in the state due to the storm. That number will likely rise. I was amazed by the immediate reaction from people on the ground in Alabama. You witnessed the tornado minutes after it touched down and ripped through the University Mall.

We all witnessed the devastation hours after the storm ripped through the college town. The damage is unspeakable.  The before and after images are stunning.

The Alabama men’s basketball team is safe, according to their coaches. Dave Telep spoke to head coach Anthony Grant via Twitter. I heard from assistant coach John Brannen late Wednesday night.

Phone lines may be down but messages are getting out there via social media. Some members of the team corresponded with family via social media, too.

Rankings, rankings, rankings

Rivals.com and 247Sports.com, in conjunction with PrepStars.com, released their finalized class of 2011 rankings on Wednesday.

Opinions vary on the order of players inside the top 10. The players, however, don’t vary that much from the full-time rankers.

Rivals.com went with Austin Rivers (Duke) as the top player while 247Sports/Prep Stars went with Anthony Davis (Kentucky).

Jerry Meyer explains why the Rivals team went with Rivers and how the rest of the top 150 played out.

Rob Harrington, one of the best in the basketball recruiting business, anchors the new rankings for 247Sports. Prep Stars will provide rankings content to the start-up site.

247Sports was formed by the brain trust that started Rivals.com many moons ago. Full disclosure, I worked for Rivals.com for several years.

Scout.com released their final top 100 rankings on Tuesday. They released their top 30 team rankings this week, too.

I will be compiling my top 10 team rankings for 2011 as well as compiling all of the rankings from all of the services for a consensus ranking in the near future.
