Creighton freshman Doug McDermott is the freshman no one is talking about.

Who is the freshman from this season that no one is talking about? I think I know the answer. Doug McDermott of Creighton had a terrific freshman season. So good that he is one of three freshman that lead their team in scoring and rebounding.

He was so good this season, that it would surprise me if Creighton is not only a NCAA tournament team next year but a second weekend team next year. I caught up with his father and coach, Greg, and asked what the secret to his son’s success was this past season.

The elder McDermott had the added benefit of seeing his son in April when other coaches were back on campus. Greg said the time spent with his son served two purposes.

“I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with Doug during those trips and as a college basketball coach that has a son that was a high school basketball you miss probably 50 percent of his games because you are dealing with your own team,” McDermott told me this week. “Traveling on the AAU circuit with Doug gave me the opportunity to watch him play and talk a lot of basketball and obviously to see him grow as a player and his confidence grow each passing game.”

For more on McDermott, be sure to read my story on FoxSports.com.

Trey Zeigler was the third leading freshman scorer in the country this season at Central Michigan with 16.3 points per game. Here was ranked inside the top 30 by Rivals.com coming out of high school. DeAndre Kane, a 21-year-old freshman at Marshall, averaged 15.1 points a contest. Few heard of him coming out of the Patterson School in North Carolina. Grades limited his recruitment.

Top ten freshman scorers in college basketball last year:
