Meet Jonas Valanciunas

You’ve met Enes Kanter. You’ve met Jan Vesely. You’ve met Donatas Motiejunas.

Now it is time to meet Jonas Valanciunas. The 6-foot-11 center from Lithuania is projected as the No. 4 pick in the current NBA mock draft on

David Locke, the play-by-play announcer for the Utah Jazz, breaks down film on Valanciunas on YouTube (a bit odd, yes) but I tend to agree with all of his assessment of the 6-foot-10 big man. Watch for yourself.

The guys at disagree. They’ve seen him in person several times and certainly know more about him than the National Hoops Report. But read the profile on Valanciunas. It doesn’t read as promising.

  • Highly competitive
  • Incredibly long
  • Tons of “upside”
  • Tremendous pick and roll player
  • Great foul shooter

  • Physically weak, not a great finisher against defenders
  • Teams attack him when on defense
  • Fouls a lot
  • Limited effort offensively
  • Not a great athlete

Truth be told, he’s a major project. The Jazz won’t draft him at No. 3. Cleveland probably won’t draft him at No. 4. Toronto has no problem drafting international players. You can go down the list in the lottery and find reasons why teams would pass on the big man.

Judging by the Locke film above or the film below or even your own YouTube search, Valanciunas doesn’t really jump at you.

Once again, another amazing Euro highlight video that opens with our favorite winter wolf.
