Start the hype machine, the Kentucky vs. North Carolina game is going to be big-time

24 May

Two of the most storied programs in the country - Kentucky and North Carolina - will play against each other in the 2011-2012 season. Anyone want to sell their media credential?

The upcoming college basketball season is shaping up to be one of the better seasons the sport has enjoyed over the last decade. The stars are returning back to school for a second year. The top teams are reloading. The match-ups are enticing.

Midnight Madness can’t come quick enough.

We’ve seen our fair share of pre-season polls across the Internets. Every pundit has a top 25 poll (in May!) and the college basketball landscape is already debating who will reign supreme in the end.

The consensus amongst basketball writers is that Kentucky and North Carolina will be the top two teams in all the land.

If college hoops needed more reason to celebrate the 2011-2012 season, how about this fun fact: John Calipari and his five-star roster play host to an experienced North Carolina squad at Rupp Arena.

North Carolina returns its entire starting lineup that lost to Kentucky in the Elite Eight of the 2011 tournament. Kentucky returns two starters from the game in Terrence Jones and Darius Miller.

The match-up is already booked for media requests. Did I mention that the game is still SEVEN MONTHS AWAY!? (The official date for the game has not been set yet.)

The reason? It is simple. This is a match-up of historical proportions, says Kentucky Sports Radio.

When the Tar Heels came rolling into Rupp two years ago, the teams featured fairly loaded rosters and over 20 NBA scouts showed up.  This year, that’s probably going to be even higher.  No disrespect to Boogie and Wall and Patterson and those guys, but consider just how stacked these two teams are going to be

This is the roster breakdown:

14 McDonald’s All-Americans

7 PARADE All-Americans

10 players projected to go in the first round of the 2012 NBA Draft (

With this much talent on the floor, you have to wonder how this will all play out. Here’s a quick look at the match-ups.

Kentucky North Carolina Advantage
PG Marquis Teague Kendall Marshall Draw
SG Doron Lamb Dexter Strickland UK
SF Darius Miller Harrison Barnes UNC
PF Terrence Jones John Henson UK
C Anthony Davis Tyler Zeller Draw
Bench Michael Gilchrist James McAdoo UNC
Jon Hood PJ Hairston
Eloy Vargas Leslie McDonald
Kyle Witljer Reggie Bullock
Stacey Poole, Jr. Justin Watts

Who will win this game? Time will tell.

So, media friends, who is willing to sell their credential on the black market? Just think about that amazing Christmas you can give your family this year?
