National Hoops Report

With the July recruiting period right around the corner, college coaches are shifting their focus to recruiting. The July period marks the first time coaches can see high school players in person against equal level competition. What’s going on in the Big 12? The National Hoops Report will take a look at the recruiting landscape of all of the teams in the conference. Today, we look at Kansas State.

Kansas State

Expected Open Scholarships: 2-3

Forward Jamar Samuels is the only senior on the Wildcat roster.  Last year the Wildcats saw three players transfer (Freddy Asprilla, Wally Judge and Nick Russell). Combine the recent nation wide trend in increased transfers and the possibility of players not being up for Frank Martin’s disciplinarian style, it won’t be a shock to see a few more ships open for KSU in 2012.

D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera, 6’3 PG, Oak Hill, VA
Perry Ellis, 6’8 PF, Wichita Heights, KS
Marcus Smart, 6’3 SG, Flower Mound Marcus, TX
Willie Cauley, 6’11 C, Olathe Northwest, KS
Shawn Smith, 6’3 SG, Providence School, Jacksonville, FL

Kansas State has put time in with elite recruits (Smith-Rivea, Ellis and Smart) but recent signs have pointed that they will not land any of the trio.

Willie Cauley lives in nearby Kansas City and his recruitment appears to be wide open.  The big man is raw offensively but has seen his stock rise this spring on the EYBL circuit for his defensive abilities and athletic ability at 6 foot 11.

Shawn Smith was in the picture but it looks like conference rival Missouri might be the front runner now for the Florida guard.

A couple unoffered names that have been listing KU are Aaron Durley and Kenny Martin.  Durley is a 6 foot 11 big from the Houston area who is already famous for playing in the little league world series at the size of 6 foot 8, 245 pounds for the Arabian American team in 2006.

Martin stands 6 foot 9 but plays on the perimeter as a combo forward.  The Arizona native recently visited Arizona St and listed the Wildcats as a school showing interest earlier this month.
