Jones-ing for scholarships

Torren Jones is no dummy. The 6-foot-7 pogo stick from Chandler (Ariz.) Basha High School knows what July is all about.

“It is scholarship time,” Jones said. “If you are a junior, it is that time where you earn those scholarships. It’s time to go get them.”

Jones is ready for the taking. The No. 69 ranked player in the class of 2013 doesn’t want to waste any time and next month is founded with one objective: earning scholarship offers.

“I’m coming in with everything I got. I want to make sure people are looking at me. I want to keep my name on the positive side with college coaches,” Jones said.

He’s on the ever-present must-see list for recruiters. Jones is somewhat raw but intriguing. He’s an athletic post with good speed in the open floor. Offensively, he’s somewhat raw but there enough pieces to make coaches take notice.

Washington was the first school to call him earlier this month. Iowa, San Diego State, Colorado and Arizona also made calls to him.

“The Washington coaches are really cool to talk to,” Jones said. “I want to stay in contact with them. Also, the (Arizona) coaches are really cool. I am going to visit there. We’ll talk. I’ll see the campus.”

Jones said he visited Colorado for an elite camp this summer and he said he will also trip to Iowa.

“My high school coach went to school (at Iowa) so he connected me to them. He wants me to go out there and see the campus and whether I like it or not,” Jones said.

With the visits, camps and July, Jones is staying true to his summer mantra.

“When July comes, I want to get some offers,” Jones said.
