With the July recruiting period right around the corner, college coaches are shifting their focus to recruiting. The July period marks the first time coaches can see high school players in person against equal level competition. What’s going on in the Big 12? The National Hoops Report will take a look at the recruiting landscape of all of the teams in the conference. Today, we look at Missouri.

Expected Open Scholarships: 8

The Tigers are in need of instant impact players for 2012 with the expected departure of seven seniors in guards, Matt Pressey, Marcus Denmon and Kim English along with forwards Laurence Bowers, Ricardo Ratliffe, Steve Moore and George Goode.

The need for bigs is much more pressing as Missouri is expected to return only Kadeem Green (6 foot 8 ) in the post.  The guards situation isn’t as dire with point guards Phil Pressey and Michael Dixon are scheduled to still be on the roster to go along with a pair of transfers becoming eligible in Keion Bell (Pepperdine) and Earnest Ross (Auburn).

Missouri will have a lot of room to wheel and deal with the open scholarships in 2012 and will look to take advantage of a national class that is filled with notable big men.  While former Louisville assistant Tim Fuller tries to secure the verbal of one of the top shooting guards in the nation, again.

Commits

Quantel Denson, 6’8 PF, Hutchinson Community College, KS (JuCo) – The first 2012 commitment of the Frank Haith era comes at an are of need, the power forward spot.  Denson is expected to be one of the better junior college post players in the 2012 class and plays in one of the better historic junior college conferences, the Jayhawk.

New assistants Issac Chew and Tim Fuller are expected to be two of the top recruiting assistants in Big 12 and they have already hit the ground running as multiple 2012 players have visited Columbia in recent weeks.   The crown jewel of the visitors was Rodney Purvis, a former Louisville commitment and one of the elite scorers in the nation.  A big reason for his commitment to Louisville was because of  Fuller and now Missouri is in his top three along with Duke and North Carolina St.

Haith is also looking to use his ties to Florida from his previous job (Miami) with a pair of Florida guards in Shawn Smith and DeVon Walker.  Both are three star scoring guards according to Rivals. Smith has already taken an unofficial to Missouri during the Haith regime while Walker hopes to make a trip as well.

Another 2012 recruit to visit recently is 6 foot 7 wing Steve Taylor out of Chicago.  Missouri is also showing interest in another big wing, Texas native Winston Shepard.  Shepard currently goes to Findlay Prep in Nevada and is a top 50 national player known for his versatility.

Negus Webster-Chan is a Canada native who was also a Louisville commit before Tim Fuller joined the Tiger staff.  Now he claims a Mizzou offer and isn’t the only Canadian to do so, AAU teammate Richard Peters, a 6 foot 10 center, also has been offered by the new staff.  Peters is a former Oklahoma commitment.

Peters isn’t the only big being recruited by Mizzou, with the need for size they already have the verbal of Hutchinson Community College big man Quantel Denson.  Another big man offer is Willie Cauley out of Kansas.  Cauley is hearing from most the Big 12 schools and is allegedly wide open.

Demetrius Henry out of Florida is a player Coach Haith had offered at Miami and now hopes the 6 foot 8 power forward is willing to head north for school.

A pair of Missouri natives are also targets.  6 foot 10 Ryan Rosburg is from the Saint Louis region, an  area that Missouri has struggled to pull talent from in recent year.  Even though his only other major offer is Tennessee, Rosburg is a player with size who could open St Louis flood gates for the new staff.    Jordon Granger also lives near St Louis but does not hold a Missouri offer yet.  He attended the recent  elite camp at Missouri and is an undersized power forward at 6 foot 7.

A couple other bigs who don’t have offers but look to be apart of the 2012 recruiting plan are Chicken Knowles (6 foot 9) and Phillip Nolan (6 foot 10).  Knowles is a Texas forward that experienced a big spring and is now considered a high major prospect by many national recruiting analysts.  Missouri like most Big 12 schools will likely be in the race for his services.

Nolan is a Wisconsin native currently at prep school in New Jersey at St. Benedicts. He is starting to pick up high major offers and with the Tiger’s need for size they could be the next school to offer.
