NY’s Finest: Isaiah Lewis is the next great guard to come out of NYC

ORLANDO – The Albany City Rocks team boasts one of the best rosters in the country with two top 15 players in Ricardo Ledo and DeJuan Coleman and talented 2012 forward Tyler Cavanaugh to back them up.

Isaiah Lewis is often forgotten when people think of City Rocks, but this week Ledo is in Puerto Rico trying out for the national team and Coleman is nowhere to be found.

Now it is up to Cavanaugh to be the primary scorer and Lewis to step up as the two man. In their first game at the AAU 17 and Under Nationals in Orlando, Canvanaugh and Lewis did just that. Cavanaugh scored when needed and Lewis was both a scorer and a distributor.

That’s what makes Lewis one of the best prospects in the class of 2013. He is starting to play both guard positions and has a lethal first step. Lewis listed Kansas, Arizona, Memphis, UNC, N.C. State, UConn, Miami, Florida and FSU.

“I really like Kansas and Kentucky. I think me and Brannen Greene might go down to Kansas for midnight madness but I’m not sure yet,” Lewis said.

Some of the things he’s looking for in a program include: “Academics, a great fan base, and a coaching staff that can prepare me for the next level.”

He says Josh Pastner and Bill Self are on him the hardest and that he talks to them frequently.

Outside of recruiting, Lewis of the famed Christ the King, said being a New York City guard carries a lot of weight.

“It’s crazy, I’m just going into my junior year and the pressure is going to be big, but I’m just going to keep on working hard and try to carry on the legacy,” he said.

That’s Lewis in a nutshell, not trying to mold his game after anyone else, or folding under the pressure of the city to carry the legacy. He’s just Isaiah Lewis, the next in a long line of legendary guards from Gotham.
