The Jarnell Stokes race is on

Jarnell Stokes is one of the premier big men in the class of 2012 and could be looking at a serious bump in the rankings after leading Memphis YOMCA to the finals of both the NIKE Peach Jam and AAU Nationals. In what can only be described as a stellar month for the power forward, things are going pretty well for the big man.

Stokes is an absolute beast in the paint and one SEC coach said “He’s a horse, you can’t stop him down there.”

The Memphis native has been working on other aspects of his game though, as he has dedicated himself to working on his ball handling skills and other perimeter skills. While some people have said he has a Karl Malone-esque skill set if he is able to continue to improve on the perimeter there’s no doubt he will end up more like Carmelo Anthony.

Plenty of schools are after Stokes but Memphis and Tennessee are trying to keep the young forward close to home.

“I’m wide open right now, but I’m considering Memphis, Tennessee, UConn, Ole Miss, Missouri, Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky and a lot of others,” he said.

Stokes also said that Arkansas, Memphis, Tennessee, UConn and Florida are sticking out to him the most at this point.

When asked who he’s connected with the most he answered quickly.

“Memphis for sure, It’s my home town. Arkansas is hard on me, too,” Stokes said. “Coach (Mike) Anderson was recruiting me at Mizzou and I’ll be taking a visit there in August. I talk to the coaches from Tennessee a lot, too. Pretty much everyone except Kentucky.”

Everyone except for Kentucky? In a time where we’re used to a crop of talented players head to Lexington every year since John Calipari has taken the helm, it is interesting that Stokes called them out on their lack of recruitment of him.

While Stokes is set to visit Memphis for Midnight Madness he maintains the fact that he is wide open still, and says he is looking for a place where he can trust the coaching staff and play inside out.

“I don’t really have a timetable.” Stokes said. “I’m going to decide when I feel it in my heart.”

What the Hogs need and what they will get are two entirely different things. Tell your boosters to save their money for some other recruit
