Number 81– Branden Dawson, SF, Fr., Michigan State

Surprised he is this high? Yes? Okay, I’m not surprised. Every list has a surprise or two in it and, hey, I like to gamble. Although, I don’t think Dawson is that big of a gamble. In fact, he’s one of the best incoming freshmen in the country because he can do one thing incredibly well – rebound.

Dawson, an Indiana native that picked the Spartans over Purdue, is the perfect Tom Izzo player. He’s tough-as-nails, ultra-competitive and will be hard to keep on the bench when the game is on the line. Izzo loves players like Dawson. He leans on them no matter their year.

Dawson won’t lead the team in scoring and he probably won’t play more than 25 minutes a game this year. But when he’s in the mix, his impact will be felt outside of the box score. Dawson is a mood-setter. And that means more toughness, more defense and better rebounding for a club that is still looking for its top to bottom identity.
