Number 78 – Tony Mitchell, PF, Fr., North Texas

The wait will soon be over. The world will finally get a chance to see Tony Mitchell, a former top 15 national recruit, play college basketball. You’ll have to dig a little to see when his games at North Texas are on television but he’ll be there.

Mitchell was denied admission to Missouri due to concerns of invalid transcript from start-up school Center of Life Christian Academy. Mitchell resurfaced at North Texas. He has only played in one league of note since his senior year at Dallas (Texas) Pinkston. Mitchell played with the U19 in Latvia this summer.

While there, he was one of the top defensive players on the roster, according to Paul Hewitt. Luke Winn of SI.com was at the event and noted this in a July article:

“A per-28-minute, tempo-free analysis of the U19s published at In-The-Game.org ranked Mitchell’s efficiency rating (20.4) second in the entire tournament, behind only Lithuania’s Jonas Valanciunas, who was the No. 5 overall pick in this year’s draft and by far the best player in Riga. Mitchell only averaged half as many minutes (15.8 mpg) as Valanciunas, but had a higher rebounding rate (0.47 rpm) and block rate (0.11 bpm) than the future Raptors center.”

North Texas is a good rebounding point for the athletic 6-foot-8 forward. The question is – will he be able to shake of the rust and live up to the hype?
