Number 56 – Josh Smith, C, Soph., UCLA

This ranking is based solely on two things: he’s coached by a fine coach in Ben Howland and the natural ability is hard to deny.

What has, and probably always will be, in question are his ever-changing weight issues. He’s bigger than ever before, according to some reports over the summer. Then there are reports saying Smith is down 10 more pounds.

Up and down. Up and down. Up and down.

The issues won’t stop. History has told us that much. What isn’t being argued is his overall talent.

Some of Smith’s best games came against ranked opponents last year and those that have watched him since his prep days know that there is a big-time player inside.

Smith has the benefit of playing alongside tough guy Reeves Nelson, who averaged 9.1 rebounds a game on the low blocks and takes pride in being the villain on the road.

There is no debating that Smith needs a tough streak. You could also argue that his hands are the softest in the country.

If there is one player that can sky rocket up (or down) this year on this very list it is Smith. Right now he’s perfectly placed in the middle.

2010-2011 STATS: 10.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1 bpg, 55.5% FG
