Number 28 – Trevor Mbakwe, PF, Sr., Minnesota

Mbakwe played for Matt Painter and USA Basketball over the summer and the Purdue coach recalled an interesting moment regarding the Gopher big man.

“They have a stat in international basketball. First time I got a box score it said ‘FD’. I wanted to know what’s FD mean on a box score. And it’s foul strong. And Trevor had games of eight, nine, 11, 12, where they simply couldn’t guard him because of his brute strength,” Painter said.

“He’s is not just one of the best players in the Big Ten, he’s one of the best players in the country. He can dominate the game on the glass. And shot blocking ability. He’s big, he’s physical, he’s fast, and he’s a good teammate. And so with those things and those qualities right there, obviously it makes Minnesota a big-time threat in our league.”

With that, we have one of the elite big men in America. Mbakwe mixes toughness, brute strength, athleticism and good hands about as well as anyone.
Minnesota is a sleeper pick coming out of the Big Ten. Mbakwe isn’t sleeping on anyone though, especially not Purdue.

2010-2011 STATS: 13.9 ppg, 10.5 rpg, 1.3 apg, 2.2  TO, 1.5 bpg, 58.2% FG
