#Dunkage: Darius Nelson

30 Oct

UTEP freshman Darius Nelson gets us started in #dunkage this year during a Miner scrimmage. The Sacramento native went the length of the court to ruin a teammates night. Nelson scored 19 points in his team’s win in front of 3,000 people.

Nelson is one of eight freshmen for Tim Floyd this year and one of 10 newcomers. The Miners are going through an identity search during the preseason. With eight players scoring in double figures between the two teams in the scrimmage, Floyd will have plenty to sort through as UTEP tries to figure out who they are exactly.

Because of opportunity, Nelson could be one of the top freshmen sleepers in the nation. He’s slimmed up his body, improved his skill set (which was already pretty strong) and confidence will certainly come as the season progresses. – Justin Young

Keith Hornsby, the son of musician Bruce Hornsby, is a freshman at UNC Asheville this season. And he can get up. Not a surprise, really. Have you ever watched the Piano All-Stars Hoops Challenge on MTV7? The old man had game.

The younger Hornsby and Matt Dickey, a buzzer-beater extraordinaire, did their thing during UNC-Asheville’s Midnight Madness.

The Doghouse should be rocking this season as Eddie Biedenbach’s team is a favorite to win the Big South this season. The team opens up at North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

I must admit. I have a thing for short guys doing crazy dunks. Jamal Fenton of New Mexico blew our minds with his head-over-heels-to-dunk last weekend. Watch it. Admit it, you were impressed.

Then comes Reggie Smith. Continue reading

New Mexico guard Jamal Fenton mixed gymnastics with hoops on Friday night at The Pit. He went for a back flip into a dunk. Oh, and he’s 5-foot-9.

“We had to end it after that,” New Mexico coach Steve Alford told the Albuquerque Journal. “What else could you do after that dunk? That’s Youtube stuff.”

Yes it is, Steve. Yes it is.

#Dunkage: Justin Graham

9 Aug

Justin Graham graduated from San Jose State this year and he’s spending the summer running the pro-am circuit in California. The pony-tailed one dunked on two defenders at the San Francisco Pro-Am finals. It was epic, brah. – Justin Young

My man Eric Bossi is at the adidas Super 64 today for the first day of action in Las Vegas. He was courtside for the Andre Drummond vs. Isaiah Austin battle. The pair are the top two big men in the class of 2012. It was an all Drummond affair, judging Bossi’s tweets. Continue reading

#Dunkage: Will Yeguete

17 Jul

Will Yeguete played just over 7 minutes a game last year for the Florida Gators. His role this season will be much greater after the loss of Vernon Macklin. The 6-foot-7 native of France is playing for his home country in the Euro Essonne event. Jonathan Givony of Draft Express praised his play on Wednesday and on Thursday. Perhaps this event is the push that Yeguete needs for a big sophomore year. – Justin Young

#Dunkage: John Williams

9 Jul

My friends at Ballin’ Is A Habit love them some John Williams. Who, you ask? The Masked Dunker. That’s who. They turned me onto the former UNC Asheville star. He has one of the most impressive dunks you’ll see. Watch where he starts and sees how his offensive rebound turns into a rim-bender. Impressive stuff from the European summer league in Las Vegas. (TAKE THAT NBA LOCKOUT!)

#Dunkage: Anthony Bennett

7 Jul

Anthony Bennett is a top 10 prospect in the class of 2012. He’s from Canada. He’s at the LeBron James Skills Academy. He also likes to dunk.

This dunk is a rare one. A reverse windmill. Do you have that one in the arsenal?
