Jeff Van Gundy is college bound

3 Nov

National Hoops Report

With the NBA players arguing with the league and the league arguing with NBA players, we have a Jeff Van Gundy pause going on right now.

If you are a fan of quick wit, sometimes brash honesty and downright amazing off-the-cuff  humor, Van Gundy is your guy. He’s great on ESPN’s NBA announcing team.

Somebody get him out of the R.V., he’s coming back to the small screen thanks to a couple of smart people in Bristol. The former Houston and New York head coach will provide color to select games for ESPN. Continue reading

National Hoops Report

For hardcore hoops fans, we met Ryan Marks for the first time this summer. Chances are you probably said to yourself “I’m going to root for this guy.”

You see, Ryan Marks is the head coach of University of Texas-Pan American men’s basketball team. You see, UTPA was 6-25 last year. You see, UTPA is one of the toughest jobs in America to recruit for. You see, this is the classic root-for-the-underdog story. Continue reading

National Hoops Report

While the U19 team struggled in game one of the World Championships, the U16 team swept the competition in Cancun last week.

Paced by the overall power of Aaron Gordon, star strength of Jabari Parker and the inside presence of Jahlil Okafor, the younger Americans made quick work of the international field and won the gold medal in undefeated fashion.

The competition didn’t come close to the Americans and the kids from the States didn’t let any team closer than 20 points. Continue reading

I’ll be watching simply because I respect what both coaches have done in their careers. You should watch because, hey, it’s June 30. What else is on television?

National Hoops Report

The opinions are mixed. Perhaps that is a good thing. Variety is a good thing in prep basketball.

However, having three players all fighting for the top spot in the class of 2012 makes it a challenge for those that make up rankings lists.

Connecticut big man Andre Drummond, Baylor bound 7-footer Isaiah Austin and Vegas wing Shabazz Muhammad are all in contention for the consensus top spot. All three share a common thread of being ranked number one overall by at least one ranking service. Continue reading
