There are a lot of coaches watching some of the top players in the country as well as other solid mid major prospects at the West Virginia JamFest. Here’s who stood out on day one.

Top performers:

Devin Thomas (2012) Mid Penn Motion- Thomas is one of the more talented prospects I saw during day one. He had some trouble finishing at the rim, but that might just have been him rubbing off being tired at 9 AM. He rebounded the ball at a high rate and had three blocks as well. He also had four assists as he found the open man driving down the lane, and he had some highlight reel dunks of his own.

Kareem Canty (2012) Long Island Lightning- During the first game Canty caused problems for Ohio Basketball Club by getting into the lane and distributing or finishing through contact at the rim. When given space he was able to knock down jumpers with regularity.

Omar Calhoun (2012) NY Gauchos- During the first game Calhoun looked a little disengaged, but he bounced back against Amile Jefferson and Phillyʼs Finest, scoring a ton and knocking down threes with ease. He finished at the rim over longer defenders and showed why heʼs considered as one of the top scorers in the country. Jim Calhoun and UCONN have a heck of a player.

Amile Jefferson (2012) Phillyʼs Finest- Had a solid second game against Team 94 in a losing effort and played well during a loss to Calhoun and the Gauchos as well. He is a super bouncy forward that surprised me with his ability to put it on the floor and drive. He has a super quick first step for a big man and heʼs a monster in the paint as well.

Surprise Players:

Pat Jones (2012) Maryland Spartans- Pat Jones is a serious scorer and could help a low to mid major from day one. He has a smooth stroke from range and good ball handling as well as great court vision. All of his skills where put on display as the Spartans won their first game easily today.

Mckenzie Moore (2011) Team 94- How this kid is still uncommitted blows my mind. He is an athletic forward that can shoot it from distance and put it on the floor. He is a natural leader that could be a special player on the mid to low major level with a bit of work. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him prep for a year and then end up somewhere bigger because of it.
